eels

The time has come to save the eels. What do you think? We need to take action or these endemic eels will become extinct.

Endemic means that they are native to a country eels will become extinct. The longfin eels can swim to the Tonga trench and back to New Zealand. That is pretty amazing.

One of the problems facing the Longfin eels is that they get stuck on their journey up to the lakes. Dams are good for making electricity but terrible for eels. The walls are too tall for the eels to climb over. Little elver eels can try but there are rats waiting to eat them and predators at the bottom of the dam.

We need to find a way to help the eels get past the DAM walls.

Another problem the eels face is pollution and disappearing rivers.

Farmers let the stock get into the rivers so they are getting polluted. Eels can’t breathe in water that is full of poo.
Farmers are also taking thousands of litres of water to irrigate their crops. This stops the rivers from flowing and destroys the eel habitat.

We need to look after our rivers for the longfin eels to survive, and so that we can swim in them too!

So, if you want the amazing longfin eel to survive, it is time for YOU to take action. Help us find ways to get them around the dams and keep our rivers clean and flowing!
